The beauty industry is a 50 billion dollar industry which we all contribute to. On average, women apply approximately 10 beauty products on their bodies each day. From cleansers, to creams, makeup, hair spray, and nail polish. That’s a lot of chemicals!
In The DIY Apothecary book, we discuss the chemicals found in cosmetics and personal care products in detail. This is an area that has concerned me for many years, which prompted me to create my own products. Even, so-called natural products found in the stores contain some form of chemical.
The top chemicals to look out for on the product labels are:
Aluminum, dyes, formaldehyde, parabens, petroleum, phthalates, sulfates, talc, and fragrance.
These chemicals cause many health concerns from allergic reactions, to hormone imbalance, and cancer.
You many wonder, why are these chemicals allowed to be sold in products? Unfortunately they are. Fragrances for example, fall under the “trade secret” agreement, which means, manufacturers are not required to disclose the ingredients.
You can find a detailed list of chemicals in your current products by checking out the Environmental Working Group database. http://www.ewg.org/skindeep
Did you know, you can make your very own body products without chemicals? These natural products smell great without the use of fragrance, AND work amazing!
It’s easier than you think, plus it’s so much fun customizing.
The DIY Apothecary is a great starter book to teach you step-by-step how to make your favourite body butters, bath oil, baby products and more!
It’s time to break-up with toxic chemicals, and start living healthier from the inside out.
I did it, and so can you!
Be well,
